A couple of weeks ago, I shared that I was starting the process of hormone testing after feeling off for months. My legs were constantly tired, my motivation was down, and running—which has always been my outlet—just wasn’t clicking the way it used to.
After being brushed off by a few doctors, I finally found someone who really listened. And honestly, that made all the difference.
The Lab Results
When the blood work came back, everything looked “normal” on paper.
But here’s the thing: normal doesn’t mean optimal—especially for women in their 40s dealing with big hormonal changes.
Even though the labs didn’t scream that something was wrong, my symptoms told a different story. Based on what I was experiencing and where I’m at in life, I was recommended a few steps to help get things back on track:
-
Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D shots for a couple of months (then switching to supplements)
-
Starting low-dose testosterone and thyroid medication
-
Adding in an over-the-counter iron supplement
What Happened Next
After just the first round of B12 and D shots, I could feel a shift.
It wasn’t 100%, but for the first time in a long time, the heavy, aching feeling in my legs actually started to ease up. That alone was a huge win.
A week later, I started the testosterone—and now, after about a week on the full plan, the difference is pretty incredible.
My legs feel lighter.
My mood is better.
And my runs?
They’re starting to actually feel good again.
A Big Step Forward
This week I finished my first real tempo workout in months. Was it perfect? No.
But it felt strong—and more importantly, it felt like me starting to come back.
There’s still a lot of work ahead as everything settles in, but for the first time in a long time, I’m feeling hopeful. And honestly, I’m just grateful to finally be moving in the right direction.
For Anyone Going Through This
If you’re in your 40s and starting to feel like your body’s shifting in ways you can’t quite explain—trust yourself.
You know your body better than anyone else.
Even if the labs say you’re “fine.”
Even if the outside world thinks you’re doing great because you’re still showing up.
Keep pushing for answers. Keep advocating for yourself. You deserve to feel good—and strong—through every phase of life.
I’ll keep sharing updates as I move through this process in case it helps another masters runner get some answers for themselves!!
